Indian Open of Surfing 2024
The Indian Open of Surfing, set for May 31 to June 2, 2024, at Sasihithlu Beach, is organized by the Mantra Surf Club and Surfing Swami Foundation under the aegis of the Surfing Federation of India. This event marks a significant gathering of top-tier surf talent in India.
As part of the National Series, this competition promises not only high stakes but also adherence to international standards, ensuring a competitive and fair environment for all participants.
Competition Rules
1.1 This is a Short Board competition part of the National Series.
1.2 The National Series Event is governed by the ISA RULEBOOK &CONTEST ADMINISTRATION MANUAL, September 2023. Link to Rulebook: Click Here
1.3 If there is a conflict between languages, English text will take precedence.
1.4 No participant substitution is permitted once registered.
1.5 Additional Rules referenced in the Notice of Event and Event Instructions may apply.
Event Advertising Guidelines
Advertising During the Indian Open of Surfing
2.1 Advertising is permitted in accordance with ISA Rules.
2.2 Boards/athletes are required to display advertising chosen and/or supplied by the Mantra Surf Club/SFI.
2.3 Participants will be responsible for keeping such advertising visible throughout the event.
Eligibility, Entry, and Registration
Joining the Indian Open of Surfing
3.1 For eligibility ISA rule in Chapter 2 Section 1 will apply. Registration process will be as per ISA Rule Chapter 2 Section 2. The competition is open to Indian passport holders.
***non-Indian passport holders who have contested before in SFI events can only take part through an accredited surf school. No points would be allocated but prize money would be awarded.
3.2 SFI will have final authority on eligibility.
3.3 Registration Fees is applicable for the event depending on category.
3.4 Registrations will close at 6 pm on 25th May 2024.
3.5 Participants are required to pay the registration fee at the time of registration verification.
3.6 Registration verification will take place on 28th March at the venue of competition, unless otherwise informed. The specific time and location for the verification will be announced closer to the date.
3.7 The fee includes entry to the competition, t-shirt, breakfast and lunch on event days.
3.8 In the event of inclement weather or in order to ensure safety, the SFI may decide to modify the events or cancel or interrupt the Event. In such cases the Entry fees will not be returned. This applies, with no limitation to exceptionally adverse weather conditions, war, mobilization, requisition, embargo, fire, flooding, strike or any blocking of the facilities caused by an event outside the control of the SFI
3.9 The entry categories & criteria will be as follows
Surf Categories
Participation in Groms Category: (Female: Age 16 & under)
- A minimum of 6 entries is required to run the category otherwise, participants will be given the option to take part in the Open category.
- Only SFI-accredited Surf Schools can nominate 2 surfers per school.
- Registration is free
Participation in Groms Category: (Male: Age 16 & under)
- A total of 32 slots in the Groms Category.
- Only SFI-accredited Surf Schools can nominate 2 surfers per school.
- Registration is free
Participation in Open Category: (Female)
- A minimum of 6 entries is required to run else the category will be cancelled.
- Only SFI SFI-accredited Surf Schools can nominate 2 female surfers per category per accredited school. (Shortboard only)
- Registration fee INR 1000
Participation in Open Category: (Male)
- Total of 56 slots in Open Category for the first 56 valid registrations.
- Top 16 surfers as per the National Rankings of 2024 will get automatic entry into the event which will be confirmed after payment and registration

Sasihithlu Beach, located in Mangalore, is the proud host of the Indian Open of Surfing 2024. Understanding Penalties
Penalties and Rules Compliance
Infringement and technical infringement penalties will be published in the Event
Instructions. The Penalties will be as per SFI Rule Chapter 2 Section 3 (c).
Scoring Overview
The scoring criteria will be explained during the judges’ briefing.
It is crucial for all competitors to attend this briefing to fully understand the criteria that will influence their scores. This ensures transparency and fairness in the judging process, aligning with international surfing standards.
Protest Committee
Committee Role
A Protest Committee (PC) will be appointed as per ISA rules Chapter 2 Section 3 (D). The Chairman PC will chair the PC.
AMENDMENTS TO NOTICE OF EVENT
The SFI may change the Notice of Event. Any such changes will be intimated to the participants.
Doping Control Advisory
Strict Anti-Doping Regulations in Effect
Competitors are reminded of the rules and regulations concerning the use of banned methods and substances, which are contained in ISF Rules Chapter 2, Section 3 (A) in the Anti-Doping Code. Doping control may take place during the regatta.
Participant Risk Acknowledgment
Understanding the Risks of Surf Competition
Competitors and support personnel participate entirely at their own risk. The SFI or any other Event officials and volunteers, will not accept any liability for material damage personal injury, or death sustained in conjunction with or before, during, or after the competition.
Indemnity Requirements
Each entrant must sign the indemnity declaration on the Entry Form at the registration verification. If under 18, the parent or guardian must sign.
For participants under the age of 18, this declaration must be signed by a parent or legal guardian to ensure the understanding and acceptance of the event’s risks.
These procedures are in place to protect both the participants and the organizers, ensuring everyone has a clear understanding of their rights and responsibilities.
Accommodation & Transport Services
Participants will have to reach the venue on their own and make their accommodation and transport arrangements.
As the Indian Open of Surfing does not provide transport or lodging facilities, we recommend exploring local hotels or guesthouses near the venue for your stay. Early bookings are highly encouraged.
For ease of access to the competition site, consider renting vehicles or coordinating with local surf communities for possible ride-sharing options.
Communication Devices Policy
Prohibited and Permitted Devices
17.1 The SFI prohibits any mechanical/electronic communication device, (including megaphones) that links a competitor in the action of competing with another party during SFI competitive events. Various other team officials [including the coach] may use this communication in the contest area.
17.2 The means of communication are allowed only for emergencies, safety, and weather reports. Each team should declare their communication equipment to the OA.
Media Rights and Permissions
Granting of Media Rights
By entering this event, the owner (or charterer), participants and support staff on competing boards grant at no cost the absolute right and permission to use their names, voice, images, likenesses, and biographical material, as well as representation of their board in any media (including television, print, and internet). SFI Rule in Chapter 2 Section 3 (D) will apply.

Dustbins will be provided for the disposal of trash, competitors and teams shall be environmentally aware and responsible at the venue.
